Treatment Options

Radiosurgery

Radiosurgery can be divided into two categories, depending on the type of cancer being treated:

SRS or stereotactic radiosurgery refers to the treatment of tumors in the brain or spine and is usually administered in a maximum of five separate treatments.

SBRT or stereotactic radiotherapy of the body is very similar to stereotactic radiosurgery, but is used for cancers located outside the brain and spine. This therapy is most commonly used for lung, liver, pancreas, and kidney cancers and is also commonly administered in a maximum of five separate treatments.

Radiosurgery, regardless of the type, can use some of these technologies as part of the overall treatment:

Imaging-guided IGRT or radiotherapy is a technique that uses 2D and 3D representations of your body to direct radiation rays to tumors from many different angles. Before each treatment, a CT scan is performed so that the tumor can be accurately located. Using special technology, our oncology team can create a detailed body view that helps them position you correctly for linear accelerator treatment.

VMAT or volumetrically modulated arc therapy uses special software and an advanced linear accelerator to enable up to eight times faster IMRT treatments. Unlike conventional IMRT treatments, during which the machine must rotate several times around the patient with stops and restarts to treat the tumor from different angles, VMAT / RapidArc can treat the entire tumor in just one rotation in less than two minutes. .

VMAT / RapidArc is an advanced form of IMRT (variable intensity beam radiotherapy) developed in 2007.

Radiosurgery is suitable for many early-stage cancers and minor metastases * such as those in the brain or spine. It can be used as an alternative to conventional surgery to treat some demanding cases, especially when the tumor is inaccessible to the surgical process or involves high-risk surgery.

Advantages of radiosurgery

  • There are no cuts, sutures and therefore no recovery time after surgery
  • It is common for the patient to be able to resume their daily activities without radiosurgery
  • Only up to five treatments need to be performed for radiosurgery treatment
